What is Sivananda Yoga

Swami Sivananda was the founder of branch of Yoga named Sivananda Yoga. One of his disciples, Swami Vishnudevananda initiated International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers all over the world. The teachings by Swami Sivananda were focused to serve the needful, love all living beings, to give what you posses, purify, to meditate and realize the real essence of life. This form of yoga has evolved from Hatha Yoga. Sivananda Yoga has five basic rules. They are Asanas (Physical exercise and postures), Pranayama (Breathing exercises), Savasana (Deep relaxation), Vegetarian diet, and Vedanta and Dhyana. In Sanskrit language word Asan simply means to sit.

In Yoga these are the different positions and postures in which a person has to perform exercises and meditation. Pranayama also is a Sanskrit word meaning to control one’s breath. As breath is related to one’s life, so to control one’s breath is to control one’s life or prana and bring self control. Savasana is also known by the name corpse pose i.e. to lie still as if one is dead. Simply one has to lie down with arms and legs wide apart and relieve all apprehension of body and mind. Diet preferred is vegetarian as it is easily metabolized and brings up overall health. Vedanta or Positive thinking is known to increase one’s repairing and immune system. Dhyana or Meditation is essential to awaken and know about the inner self. To perform Sivananda Yoga simply sit in a cross leg position. Some basic warm up exercises have to be performed. Perform Kapalabhati and Anuloma Viloma. Start by doing Surya Namaskar. After this there are almost twelve asana and postures which have to be mastered and done in a sequence under Sivananda Yoga. Always the session has to be finished by undergoing Savasana.
