Navadurga or “the nine Durgas” are the nine forms in which Goddess Durga is made the subject of worship during the nine nights of Navratri. According to tradition these names were laid out by Brahma and are chanted in the Devi Kavacham of the Durga Saptashati. Each night honours one form. They walk a single walk together, of rootedness, discipline, courage, creation, motherhood, battle, the clearing of fear, purity, and fulfilment.
Shakti is Durga, her own power sustaining and protecting the world. She is the mightiest power of the gods in the Devi Mahatmya and is created by those forces that man cannot overcome using his own arm. Navadurga is not a group of nine goddesses, but nine manifestations of the one power that are manifested on each of the nine days of the festival.
Shailaputri (Day 1), daughter of the mountain. She turns out to be Sati, who renounced her body at Daksha’s sacrifice, and Parvati, the daughter of Himavan. She is riding Nandi, the bull, and carrying a trident and a lotus. Her job is to provide a good start, stability, patience and a sense of orientation.
Brahmacharini (Day 2), ascetic who walks the way of sacred discipline. She is naked, carrying a rudraksha mala and a water pot and is the form of Parvati’s long penance to please Shiva. She is hardworking and devoted; self-controlled and capable to maintain a commitment; her work is tapas.
Chandraghanta (Day 3) refers to the bell-shaped moon on her forehead. She is married to Shiva and her husband is depicted mounted on a tiger or lion, and holding a weapon. It is believed that her bell expels evil. Her new work is a quality of courage in ordinary existence – protecting the household, being prepared without panic.
Kushmanda (Day 4) Her smile is said to illuminate the entire universe and she is often depicted with eight arms, a lion and a pot of nectar. Her work is creative energy: a healthy, vital and powerful world and life that come out of the dark.
Skandamata (Day 5) “Mother of Skanda”, Kartikeya. In her hand she has hold of the child and she is sitting on a lion or a lotus. Her work is nurture: the protective love that feeds, teaches and clears the way to what must grow.
Katyayani (Day 6), born of the powers of the gods at the request of a sage, Katyayana, rides a lion and holds a sword, is a warrior. In the later narration she is the type which is desired by the gopis. Her work is righteous strength; the will to look at what must be looked at and to cut through injustice.
Kalaratri (Day 7) The dark night (kalaratri) the most terrible of the nine. She is dark-compleioned, loose-hair, rides on donkey and is able to destroy ignorance, fear, and harmful forces. Her work is not about cruelties, it is about clarity; she clears the path so that peace can follow.
Mahagauri (Day 8). A fair, serene and auster person, riding a bull and carrying a trident and a drum, often in white. Her art is purity, forgiveness and peace, post resolution.
Siddhidatri (Day 9). “Giver of siddhis.” With her 4 arms, holding 4 items, a conch, a discus, a mace, and a lotus, she bestows the 8 attainments and, in a broader context, the 4 aims of life: dharma, artha, kama, and moksha. It is claimed Shiva even meditated on her for these powers. Completeness is her work; wisdom and spiritual insight and fulfilment she was carrying the nine nights towards.
The nine forms are a map, to be read as a sequence. Worship is born of identity and discipline, empowered by courage, inspired by creation and caring, faced by what must be fought and what must be feared, and marked by purity and accomplishment. That victory is celebrated on Vijayadashami (tenth day). In all the parts of the world where Navratri is celebrated, the same cycle is maintained and local colour and custom are conserved.
